Places to visit in Tanzania

Serengeti
With its rolling grasslands, iconic acacia trees and almost impossibly dense concentrations of wildlife, a Serengeti safari is the very definition of African opulence and indulgence. Created in 1951 and famous for the Great Migration, this vast national park encompasses at least 60% of the route taken by the wildebeest, zebra and gazelle when they follow the rains in search of better grazing. Watching the million-strong herds move en masse – pursued by lion, leopard and cheetah – is one of nature’s most staggering spectacles. And in the Serengeti, it’s an almost year-round highlight.
Ngorongoro Crater
When it comes to natural stages, the astounding Ngorongoro Crater sits head and shoulders above anything else on planet earth. Situated in Northern Tanzania, in close proximity to the Serengeti, this breath-taking volcanic caldera forms a dramatic natural amphitheatre measuring more than 8000km2. The views from the rim will leave you speechless, but the real magic happens when you descend to the basin to get up close and personal with the Big 5 (Ngorongoro boasts the highest concentration of predators in the world), prolific birdlife and flourishing endemic flora. To top it all, the local Maasai tribe graze their livestock in the crater freely.
Lake Manyara
One of Tanzania’s smaller parks, Lake Manyara doesn’t get the same crowds as its more famous cousins, but this only makes a safari here all the more special. Boasting an incredible diversity of vegetation and topography (a total of 11 different ecosystems), it’s most famous for its astonishing tree-climbing lion. But its enigmatic forest elephant and the millions of flamingos (and other birds) which flock to the lake during the rainy season are equally jaw-dropping.
Tarangire
South of Lake Manyara lies Tarangire National Park – famous for its elephant and a haunting baobab forest. Overlook Tarangire at your peril, especially in the dry season when the Tarangire River acts as a magnet to lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, buffalo, eland and Thompson’s gazelle, to name but a few. Sun-parched termite mounds, romantic grasslands and more than 500 species of birds ensure that your Tarangire safari will be truly unforgettable.
