Enjoy a tropical island paradise on this volcanic island

With its azure waters, powder-white beaches and abundant coral reefs, Mauritius is the very definition of a tropical island paradise. But this magnificent volcanic island 2400km from the African mainland is about more than just beaches: prepare to be seduced by its lush forests, burbling waterfalls and fascinating cultural mélange. From the bustle of Grand Baie to the pristine sands of Belle Mare and the spectacular Seven Coloured Earth of Chamarel, Mauritius is proof that dynamite comes in small packages.

Tour Itinerary Idea & Inspiration for Mauritius

African Opulence works with exceptional properties in all four corners of Mauritius to guarantee the experience of a lifetime. Choose between the glitz and glamour of Grande Baie, the exclusive opulence of the East Coast beaches, the adrenaline-packed southwest and the rugged perfection of the deep south.

In addition to your hotel stay, we can arrange a broad array of watersports (big game fishing, scuba diving, sailing, stand-up paddle-boarding…the list goes on and on), cruises, activities and bespoke day trips to suit every age and inclination. Witness the Seven Coloured Earth at Chamarel, hike in the Black River Gorges National Park or enjoy a day cruise to Île aux Cerfs. What’s more, we’ll take care of all the boring stuff: airport transfers, car rental and the like.

Places to visit in Mauritius

Grand Baie and the North
The north – with its unblemished beaches and sheltered coves – is home to a range of fantastic properties to suit every whim. The elegant waterside town of Grand Baie is Mauritius’ undisputed tourist hub and home to some of the island’s best shopping, restaurants and nightlife. If you want to get away from it all, the inland plain is only a short drive away: visit the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens (both the lily pads and the tortoises are giant) and the fascinating L’Aventure du Sucre sugar museum.
Flic en Flac and the West
Touristy Flic en Flac might not agree with everyone, but it’s impossible not to be transfixed by the diverse natural wonders of Mauritius’ western coast. From the scalloped sandy bays of Black River to the shimmering salt flats of Tamarin and the lush indigenous forests of the Black River Gorges National Park, it’s hard to fathom how so much diversity can be crammed into such a tiny area. And that’s before you’ve even witnessed the world-famous Seven Coloured Earth near bewitching Chamarel.
Mahébourg and the South
The south – with its dramatic cliffs and absence of protective coral reefs – is the least developed corner of the island, and a favourite among Mauritius connoisseurs. In amongst the wild beaches, traditional fishing villages and historic sugarcane plantations you’ll find a smattering of high-end resorts and a whole lot of fresh air. It’s impossible not to fall under quaint, cobbled Mahébourg’s spell, and the stunning Le Morne peninsula (bring your swimsuit, hiking boots and kiteboard) is worthy of a thousand odes.
Île aux Cerfs and the East
La Côte Sauvage is blessedly devoid of tourist tat, and it also boasts some of the island’s very best beaches. Unsurprisingly, it’s the most exclusive corner of the island – hotels in this neck of the woods focus on quality over quantity – but the east still manages to retain a delightful wilderness feel. With its perfect beaches and sparkling waters, Île aux Cerfs is an extremely popular day-cruise destination (take a stroll to escape the crowds) and it’s also home to an utterly spectacular 18-hole golf course (let us arrange a tee time).
