Places to visit in Kenya

Masai Mara

The Masai Mara – a spectacularly diverse ecosystem which boasts the highest concentration of lion on the planet – provides the splendid backdrop for what can only be described as Africa’s greatest wildlife show: The Great Migration. Both tourists and predators (lion, crocodile, leopard, cheetah…) are drawn to the annual spectacle (July – October), which sees millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle traverse this acacia-dotted paradise in search of water, but in truth the Masai Mara is a once-in-a-lifetime delight all year round.

Amboseli National Park

Situated in the south-west of Kenya, Amboseli National Park offers mesmerising views of the permanently snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, and the opportunity to get up close and personal with the park’s enormous herds of elephants. Amboseli’s topographical diversity (the park encompasses plains, woodlands, rocky thorn-bush and swamps) means you’ll get to see a wide range of birds, animals and scenery on your Amboseli safari, while also immersing yourself in the legendary warrior lifestyle of the Maasai people.

Samburu
Off limits to the public for many years, the Samburu National Reserve is a pristine system of fauna and flora in central Kenya. Named after the Samburu people who still live on the park’s fringes, and dominated by the Ewaso Ng’iro River which brings life to this otherwise arid region, you can hope to encounter elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion on your Samburu safari. Although Meru gets most of the credit, Samburu was one of the parks where George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa of Born Free fame.
Meru
After a tricky period in the 90s and 2000s when Meru was plagued by poaching, this Kenyan gem is back in a big way. The jungles, rivers, swamps and grasslands of this diverse park on the slopes of Mount Kenya harbour an array of wildlife, including the endangered Grevy’s zebra and bohor reedbuck…Not to mention burgeoning populations of lion, elephant and rhino. Meru – which is renowned for its natural beauty and snow-capped backdrop – was Elsa’s primary home and the location for the Hollywood adaptation of Born Free.
Lake Nakuru
Located on the floor of the Great Rift Valley and teeming with immense flocks of iridescent flamingos, Lake Nakuru is a birdwatcher’s paradise if ever there was one. The 188km² national park encompasses vast grasslands, rolling hills and dramatic cliffs and waterfalls. While not a Big 5 destination, visitors to Lake Nakuru can marvel at the abundant rhino, pelican, flamingo and endangered Rothschild’s giraffe, and bask in the reserve’s tranquil African opulence.
Lake Naivasha
At 1884m above sea level, Lake Naivasha (a two-hour drive from Nairobi) is the highest of the Great Rift Valley lakes, and consequently the coolest. This remarkable inland sea surrounded by verdant grassy banks is renowned for its prolific birdlife, substantial herds of hippo and stupefying sunsets. Boasting zebra, giraffe and over 400 bird species, Lake Naivasha is the perfect antidote to the bustle of Nairobi, and a great overnight stop on any Kenya safari.
Aberdare
The high-altitude cloud forests of Aberdare National Park are quite unlike any other Kenyan reserve, featuring fecund foliage, dramatic 300m waterfalls and a bounty of bird, plant and insect life. Not that the mighty Aberdare Mountains are devoid of big game: endangered black rhino, secretive leopard and enigmatic forest elephant also call them home
Malindi & Watamu
These charming coastal towns, situated only 25km from one another, both feature laid-back coastal charm, powder-white beaches and easy access to the lichen-covered 13th-century ruins at Gedi. Not to mention their own marine national parks where you can snorkel, scuba and kayak to your heart’s content. A few days in either Malindi or Watamu is the perfect way to unwind after an unforgettably opulent Kenya safari.
Lamu
Dating back to the 13th century, Lamu Old Town is the oldest continually inhabited settlement in East Africa, and its carved doorframes, maze-like alleyways and proud dhow-building tradition captivate all who visit. But culture isn’t the only thing the dazzling Lamu archipelago has to offer: its snow-white beaches are among the world’s very best, and its crystalline waters teem with fish, coral and marine life. Did we mention the island is home to 3000 donkeys and only two cars?
Mombasa
Kenya’s second city is a bubbling cultural stew of spices, scents and mosques, and the beaches to the south of the city are out of the very top drawer. Navigating the narrow streets of the historical city centre will take you back at least 200 years, while the fascinating Fort Jesus – built to protect the trade routes to India – winds back the clock all the way to the 16th century. The great port cities of the world have a way of springing delectable surprises upon all who visit, and Mombasa is no exception
